「2003年「絵画の証」展出品作。80、90年代隆盛を極めた絵画は一転、その死も喧伝される不遇の状況を迎える。そういう趨勢の下「今なぜ絵画なのか」という問いかけを起点として企画された公募形式の展覧会は、出品作にその存在自体が説得力のある回答である事を求めるものであったと思う。カゼインテンペラをエアブラシで吹き付けるという実験によって得られた白の作品は、焦点を結ぶ手がかりの少ない、視線の彷徨を促す絵肌を持つ極めて抽象性の高い作品である。今回の再展示にあたって、この作品が20年後の現時点での「今なぜ絵画なのか」という問いに答え得るものであればうれしく思う。 越野潤
The two works exhibited this time were shown in the 2003 group exhibition “Proof of Painting”. Painting, which had flourished in the 1980s and 1990s, suddenly faced a difficult situation in which its demise was widely predicted. Under such circumstances, this exhibition was planned with the question “Why painting now?” as its starting point, seeking works whose very existence would serve as a convincing answer. The white works created through the experimental technique of applying casein tempera with an airbrush feature a highly abstract surface that lacks focal points, encouraging the viewer's gaze to wander. I would be delighted if this work, when re-exhibited today, could provide an answer to the question “Why painting now?” from the perspective of 20 years later. JUN KOSHINO
