Gallery Yamaguchi first conceived the idea of organizing an exhibition of Dan Flavin's work in 1995. We inquired with Ms Marianna Stockbrand, then director of the Chinati Foundation, which had been established by Donald Judd, about the possibility of holding an exhibition of Flavin's work. She promptly contacted Flavin himself, who readily agreed. We sent the floor plan of the gallery space in Kawaguchi, Osaka, and discussions were progressing with the agreement that he would create new works specifically for that space. The fluorescent lights used in the new artwork were procured in Osaka and were scheduled to be displayed according to the artist's instructions. In July 1996, his health suddenly deteriorated and he was hospitalized, and we were informed that the plans for Gallery Yamaguchi could not be completed. However, since Mr. Flavin was well aware of the relationship between Donald Judd and Gallery Yamaguchi, he requested that an exhibition be held featuring the work “Untitled (To Don Judd, colorist)” This exhibition was realized under such circumstances. Unfortunately, Mr. Flavin passed away on November 29, 1996, shortly after the exhibition concluded, making it his final solo exhibition, though on a smaller scale, during his lifetime.
